Update 2023-03-29: Valdosta Creek Trash Tour 2023-03-29.

Valdosta, Georgia, March 9, 2023 — Come help get trash out of the woods by Two Mile Branch, upstream and downstream from Berkley Drive, in this joint cleanup by WWALS and the City of Valdosta.

Valdosta City Engineer Benjamin O’Dowd said, “The City will have a temporary floating trash trap installed at Berkley Drive around the 1st of April. Our long-term goal is to install a permanent trash trap at the intersection of Oak Street and Two-mile Branch. In the meantime, the City is excited to partner with WWALS and the local community to clean up the litter scattered within the City property along Two-mile Branch between Berkley and Oak Street.”

Please meet 8 AM, Saturday, March 25, 2023, at 507 Mack Drive. Trash bags and gloves will be provided. Wear sturdy clothes and mud boots, and bring a trash picker if you have one.

Suwannee Riverkeeper John S. Quarterman said for WWALS, “It’s refreshing to see some forward motion on trash by the city of Valdosta. There’s much more to do, but every step forward is a good step.”

Bobby McKenzie, long active on the trash issue, said, “Cleanups like this are meaningless unless measures are put in place to prevent reaccumulation of trash build up. Engineering controls such as trash trapping devices and administrative controls such as code enforcement help reduce this buildup. Looking forward to see what measures the City puts in place to mitigate future buildup.”
