Trash, Withlacoochee River, Troupville 2022-11-13

Hot Damn! It’s the Trashy Bottom Boys!

I went down to Troupville Boat Ramp to collect a water sample, and who should I spy? Bobby McKenzie and Russell Allen McBride, the Trashy Bottom Boys.

They were just back from a mile-and-a-half roundtrip down the Little and Withlacoochee Rivers to clean up trash. That location is now in the WWALS map of the Withlacoochee and Little River Water Trail as Trashy Shoals.

A small paddle after work at the Troupeville boat ramp. Thanks to river rat Bobby McKenzie for helping pick up a trash jam that was left when the river was quite a bit higher.

Mission was a success. Trash Jam clean. Two large bags of mostly plastic and styrofoam. Headed back to Troupeville.

Bobby McKenzie made a tiktok video and posted it on facebook.

Low water on the Withlacoochee means it’s easier to grab the Stormwater runoff trash.

And enjoy the sounds at the shoals.

Last year on the WWALS Mayor’s paddle, a couple people fell in the river trying to pull out trash. It’s extremely more difficult trying to pull the trash out of the river than it is stopping it from entering the river in the first place.

This is what’s called legacy trash, meaning trash already in the river before the WaterGoat was installed.

There have been at about 5 WWALS chainsaw cleanups and too much trash in the river to get out on kayaks. This is some of the trash that escaped those cleanups and had washed further downstream. And now it’s been removed!

These are the chainsaw cleanups this year:

I think Bobby is referring to one of the earlier ones.
