WWALS joins Floridians Against Fracking

Per unanimous vote of the WWALS Board, WWALS has joined Floridians Against Fracking:

The goal of the coalition is a ban on fracking in Florida. To that end, we support state, and local efforts to ban fracking.

Why?

Fracking and drilling associated with fracking for oil and natural gas poses a direct and immediate threat to the drinking water, air, food, health, wildlife, climate, and economy of communities across Florida….

What are the tenets of the coalition?

  1. Fracking is inherently unsafe.
  2. We define fracking as including the processes and treatments associated with hydraulic fracturing, acid fracking, acidization, and well stimulation for the purpose of oil and gas exploration and production.
  3. We believe fracking cannot be safely regulated.
  4. Therefore, we support a ban on fracking in Florida.
  5. We believe the path to winning a ban on fracking n Florida includes working to build an engaged citizenry that recognize these facts and are pushing for the ban.

Here’s what WWALS put on the sign-up form:

WWALS represents the Withlacoochee, Alapaha, and Upper Suwannee Rivers in north Florida and south Georgia.

WWALS voted in February to support a ban on fracking in Florida.

WWALS members were instrumental in persuading Hamilton County, FL to pass a resolution against fracking, as did Madison County, FL, both in WWALS watersheds.

Earlier, WWALS members convinced FERC and Sabal Trail to move that fracked methane pipeline off the Withlacoochee (north) River in Florida. Now WWALS is petitioning FL-DEP to deny a permit for Sabal Trail (we have a deadline extension to August 7th).

New pipelines are driven by fracking: stop one; help stop both.
