Hamilton County resolution to ban fracking in Florida

The Hamilton Co. BOCC voted today to pass Resolution 2015-2, a resolution to support SB-166 and HB-169 to ban Fracking in the State of Florida.

300x400 WHEREAS, in Resolution to ban fracking in Florida, by Hamilton County BOCC, for WWALS.net, 3 March 2015 A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF HAMILTON COUNTY, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING PROPOSED LEGISLATION (SB 166 and HB 169) PROVIDING A STATEWIDE BAN ON HYDRAULIC FRACTURING, ACID FRACTURING, AND WELL STIMULATION PERFORMED FOR THE PURPOSES OF EXPLORATION OR PRODUCTION OF OIL OR NATURAL GAS IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

WHEREAS, well stimulation treatments may involve the use of hundreds of chemicals, some of which are known to be carcinogenic or could otherwise be harmful to human health; and

WHEREAS, exposure to the chemicals used in well stimulation neatments may pose a widespread and significant risk to public health and safety and the environment; and

WHEREAS, well stimulation treatments may involve the use of substantial amounts of freshwater at a fime when many Florida municipalities are struggling with the impacts that water scarcity may have in the state in the near future; and

WHEREAS, the wise stewardship of our natural resources involves protection of Florida’s water supplies and water resources for generation to come; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF HAMILTON COUNTY, FLORIDA:

  1. That the Hamilton County Board of County Commissioners support a statewide ban on the use of hydraulic fracturing, field fractlmng, and well stimulation treatments performed for the purposes of exploration or production of oil or natural gas in the State of Florida due to the potential harmful impacts on the environment and natural resources of Hamilton County.
  2. That the Clerk for this Board of County Commissioners shall furnish a copies of this Resolution to the Governor and Florida Legislative Delegation for Hamilton County as soon as reasonably possible.
  3. Effective Date. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon adoption.

DULY ADOPTED in regular session, this 3rd day of March 2015.
