Cleanup finishing at Flying J, Exit 2, I-75, Lowndes County, GA 2019-12-10

Update 2022-03-02: Trash beyond fence not finished at Flying J, I-75 exit 2 2022-02-26.

Thanks, Flying J and Lowndes County Code Enforcement, for finishing cleaning up what was a huge mess of trash at Exit 2 on I-75 in Lowndes County, Georgia.

Back in August, a WWALS member called Code Enforcement, and I followed up. Code Enforcement responded quickly, came to an agreement with the company, and the cleanup started a week or two later.

The workers told me they had hauled out still more tires and mounds of other junk. Now they’re finishing the wood fence.

What is that green water?

[Flying J to Withlacoochee River]
Flying J to Withlacoochee River

It appears to be a skinny retention pond around the Flying J’s property (in the upper right of this map). Where it goes if it overflows is not clear. According to USGS, I-75 is the divide between the Withlacoochee and Alapaha Basins at that point. The closest creek seems to have no name, but flows southwest to join the Withlacoochee River just upstream of Sullivan Launch (in the lower left of the map), in Hamilton County, Florida.

So at least that green water is not usually flowing into any river. And now maybe it will get cleaner with much less trash in it.
