How many rivers in WWALS watersheds?

  • Our longest rivers include the Alapaha, Withlacoochee, Santa Fe, and Suwannee upper and lower. That’s four rivers.
  • Flowing into the Withlacoochee are the New and Little Rivers. That’s six rivers.
  • Flowing into the Alapaha are the Willacoochee, Alapahoochee, and Little Alapaha Rivers, with the Dead River flowing out of it. That’s ten rivers.
  • Flowing into the Suwannee are the Black River, another Little River, and the Gopher River down near the Gulf. That’s thirteen rivers.
  • Flowing into the Santa Fe are the Ichetucknee, another New River, and the Sampson River. That’s sixteen rivers.
  • Plus many creeks, swamps, lakes, and ponds within our watersheds, including the Okefenokee Swamp, which is the headwaters of the Suwannee River. In Colquitt County, Georgia, Okapilco Creek is known as Okapilco River, so that’s seventeen rivers.
  • Of the rivers, only the Withlacoochee, Little, Alapaha, Alapahoochee, Santa Fe, and Suwannee are generally considered boatable, and (usually) none of the creeks.
  • In Georgia, only the Suwannee River is considered navigable, although in Florida all of the Suwannee, Alapaha, and Withlacoochee Rivers are considered navigable.
  • Right of passage is generally considered available on all the rivers in the Basin where there is enough water.

Little Alapaha River

A disappearing stream that, like the Alapaha River, goes into a sinkhole at the Cody Scarp, the Little Alapaha River arises in Echols County, Georgia, just before it flows into Hamilton County, Florida, where it falls into a sinkhole west of Jasper, briefly reappearing before vanishing again. Theoretically it is a tributary of the Alapaha River, but it is not clear the waters of the Little Alapaha River ever reach the Alapaha River aboveground.
